2023 SCA Farm Visit held at Bath Soft Cheese, Park Farm, Kelston, Bath, BA1 9AQ on 1 and 2nd July 2023 courtesy of Hugh Padfield.
The Padfield family have been happily milking a herd of cows at Park Farm for four generations. Edward Ernest Padfield took on 240 acres of Park Farm in August 1914. Cheddar cheese was made by his wife. In 1990, when Graham Padfield decided to start making cheese again, he was able to do so in the very same buildings in which his grandmother had made her Cheddar nearly 80 years before.
The farm is now over 500 acres, the herd is holstein friesians and brown swiss, and cheese production is in a new cheese dairy adjacent to the cattle dairy and milking parlour. It also hosts a cafe, viewing gallery and small cheese shop. Hugh, Graham’s son, now runs the farm and cheese business. The award-winning cheeses are now made less than 50 yards away from where the cows are milked.

More than 100 of the U.K.’s top Artisan cheesemakers, retailers and wholesalers gathered at Loch Arthur Camphill Community in Beeswing for the annual farm visit of the UK Specialist Cheesemakers Association. This was only the second time that the event has taken place in Scotland in its 30 year history and was a wonderful platform for the ever increasing group of Scottish Artisan Cheesemakers to interact with their peers and colleagues and showcase their diverse products in what must have undoubtedly been “Scotland’s Largest Cheeseboard”.
The event has been months in preparation and included talks, technical presentations and discussions, tours around Loch Arthur, the Creamery and dairy farm and visits to Rainton Farm’s new Ethical Dairy project.
